The education system in Japan
I chose Japan because its history, art, culture and philosophy have always seemed very interesting and captivating to investigate.
According to Pisa annual reports, Japan has one of the most efficient educational systems in the world, and always ranked among the top five when it comes to school achievement in science, language, and mathematics. However, during 2019 it was evidenced that more than 100.000 students dropped out of school and that more than 300.000 had a "tendency to drop out of school". The reason for this is quite simple: the excessive pressure exerted by the Japanese education system has collapsed many young people. This phenomenon of constant absence from school has been called in Japan as "futoko".
Japanese society is characterized by being quite disciplined, rigorous, competitive and with a strong sense of importance to work, so education follows the same guidelines. While the Japanese education system is very good at certain points, it is also characterized by generating immense stress and school pressure on students. Young people are forced to follow, both inside and outside school, numerous strictly guided rules to strengthen social and school discipline. Moreover, in this system "everyone must be equal and homogeneous", leaving little room for plurality and personal freedom. In addition, another major problem of this educational system is that learning is based entirely on the memorization of prefabricated questions and answers for subjects, leaving very aside the strengthening of critical, innovative and expressive thinking in individuals.
Unfortunately, the constant social pressure that forces students to comply correctly with the strict requirements of the educational system has impaired the mental health of young Japanese people. Moreover, as the problem grows and the years pass, adolescent suicide and school violence rates have grown dramatically, with one of the main factors being the issue of the education system: an alarming situation for the country of the rising sun.
Hi Juan! Japan is a great country in terms of culture, economy and security, but his educational system is very harmful and hard. Unfortunately, the Japanese society is she is used to hard work without rest. I think that always the educational system have to think and look about the mental health of the students for a better condition of learning. Thank you for share this reality of Japan!
ResponderEliminarHi Juan, she was a little informed about their situation and how their culture ends up pressuring them to the level that many commit suicides. It's similar to what happens in South Korea and their very good education and their very poor mental health.
